Chapter Six
George emerged from a long, leisurely soak in Aidan’s huge bath to find he’d set out a pile of fluffy white towels for her and left a hairdryer on his bed. She made use of everything, taking the opportunity to study his bedroom in more detail. The huge bed was set in the middle of the room rather than against a wall, and at the foot was a blanket box. She could not resist lifting the lid to see if he kept any toys there, though she thought it unlikely given the treasure trove in the attic. Sure enough, just bed linen, neatly folded, and a stack of towels.
His furniture was modern, but solid, made of black lacquered wood. It seemed to suit him. His wardrobe was huge. She peeped in to find smart suits, dozens of shirts, all freshly laundered and pressed, more ties than she could count, and a shelf at the bottom devoted to shoes which were polished to a high shine. Aidan Blake had expensive taste in clothes, and knew what looked good. He was the exact opposite of her.
George had used up her one decent outfit last night when she turned up here, bent on seduction. It had done the trick which was just as well really, she had nothing in reserve. The rest of her wardrobe consisted of jeans, legging, tea shirts, trainers and steel toe cap boots. Her underwear could best be described as serviceable, and her only really pretty pair of knickers were now in Aidan’s trophy cabinet or wherever he kept such items.
In fact, she had nothing to wear now except for the work clothes she had had on all day, and those just weren’t an option. She returned to the wardrobe and selected a nice lemon-coloured shirt. She slipped it on. It fell to just above her knees, but was decent enough. Not that this seemed such a priority any more. She left the room and padded barefoot down the stairs. Aidan’s voice interspersed with Lily’s inarticulate giggles drew her in the direction of the lounge.
He lay on the sofa, Lily tucked in beside him. The baby had his discarded tie in her plump little hands and had crumpled the fabric up to suck on it. She was making contented little chuntering sounds as Aidan read to her from a sheet of white paper.
Not his article, surely?
His tone was low as he read. “Harriet, the baby hippo wasn’t very happy. In fact, it had been two days since she had smiled at all! It all began a couple of days back when she was brushing her teeth as usual in the morning and she felt a strange feeling in her mouth.”
Evidently not. No mention of data retrieval here. George stepped into the room. Aidan glanced at her and tilted his chin to indicate she should join them. She perched on the end of the sofa, by Aidan’s feet. He continued with the tale of poor, unhappy Harriet “
“Mummy’s here. She can listen too.
